Shipping Container Maritime Administration (SCMA) Director Ron Clements said Tuesday that the Container Security Act of 2016 has been signed into law.
The legislation is a major win for the industry and an effort to modernize and improve security for containers on the seas, he said in a statement.
The SCMA will implement its final rule to the law by April, Clements added.
The container security bill passed the House on March 26, 2017, and was sent to the Senate on March 30, 2017.
The Senate passed it last month, 49-47, after a two-week special session that was delayed due to Hurricane Harvey.
