A Southern freight carrier has applied for a berth at the Port of Tampa.
The company submitted its application to the port on Wednesday, according to a press release.
The company is an operator of Southern Pacific and is known for its delivery of freight and commodities to international markets.
Southern Pacific, which has operations in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico, Florida and New Jersey, was founded in 1897 and is based in Jacksonville, Fla.
It employs more than 8,500 people and has a fleet of more than 4,400 vessels.
The Port of Jacksonville, which oversees ports in Florida, Virginia and North Carolina, is the nation’s largest port for transporting cargo.
