But in the last two years the industry also experienced a major downturn as trucking companies went into administration.
In the latest downturn, freight dispatching was forced to shift to a new technology to meet demand.
Capey’s Freights says it is recruiting on a permanent basis, as the industry struggles to find enough drivers.
Freight dispatcher Craig Mascarenhas been working in the industry for seven years.
“This is a very stressful job to be a part of, I’m quite lucky to be able to do it,” he said.
“We have a very limited supply of truck drivers.”
There is a huge shortage of truckers in Australia.
“It’s an incredibly important job and a very lucrative job for people who have a job in the trade.”
The company said it was hiring on temporary and a handful of other positions were being advertised.
“I think the biggest challenge for us is that we have to look at the whole industry, and the freight sector as a whole, and what we need to do to get back on track,” Mr Mascareson Friday.
“At the moment there are a lot of trucks that we’re not even seeing in the road, but I would say that’s probably going to change over the next few months.”
Freight Dispatch is Australia’s largest freight dispatch company and a key employer in South Australian and regional areas.
The company says it’s losing hundreds of jobs and the economy is in recession.
